Reiki is a gentle, deeply restorative form of energy healing that works with the natural life force flowing through all living beings. The word itself comes from two Japanese syllables, Rei, meaning 'Universal' or higher wisdom, and Ki, meaning 'Life Force Energy'.
Together, Reiki can be understood as 'Universal Life Energy', the subtle and intelligent force that nourishes and sustains life.
Reiki, as a healing system, was founded by Mikao Usui in early 20th-century Japan. His journey was one of deep spiritual inquiry. Guided by a sincere wish to understand healing, he devoted himself to meditation, study, and inner practice.
This search led him to a retreat on Mount Kurama, where he undertook 21 days of fasting, prayer, and meditation. On the final day, he experienced a profound awakening. He described feeling a great Reiki descend through him, bringing clarity and insight. In that moment, he realized a method of healing that he later called Reiki Ryōhō.
From this experience, Reiki emerged as something simple and natural, accessible to anyone willing to receive and practice it.
At its essence, Reiki is a practice of allowing. The practitioner does not direct or control the energy. Instead, they become a clear channel through which this universal life force flows. The energy is understood to move where it is needed, supporting balance and harmony in its own way.
Reiki is shared through gentle touch or by holding the hands just above the body. In advanced levels even distance healing i.e. channeling Reiki energy without being present at the location and with the person needing it, is possible. Many people experience a sense of warmth, calm, or quiet stillness during a session. It invites the body to relax and the mind to soften thereby releasing the tension and stress from the body, mind, auras and chakras.
A unique aspect of Reiki is the process of attunement, sometimes called 'Initiation'. This is not something that comes from study alone. It is a direct energetic opening, passed from a teacher to a student. Through this process, a person becomes connected to Reiki and begins to experience its flow naturally and connects them to the lineage of the 'Gurus' thereby rooting them with the energy practice from this lineage.
With this connection, Reiki becomes part of everyday life. It can be used for self healing, supporting physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. It can also be shared with others, offering a sense of calm and balance. Many find that it deepens meditation and brings a greater sense of awareness and presence.
Reiki also carries a simple way of living. It encourages qualities such as gratitude, compassion, and mindfulness, gently guiding a person back to a more centered and peaceful state.
Reiki does not replace other forms of care. It works alongside them, supporting the body and mind at an energetic level and encouraging the natural process of healing.
More than a technique, Reiki is a quiet path back to balance. A return to stillness. And within that stillness, healing begins to unfold in its own time.
